How about waking up to enjoy a delightful breakfast with a spectacular view of the Caucasus Mountains and pristine Goygol Lake? That is exactly what I did, after spending a night at the Goygol Hotel this spring. Homemade butter and cheese, honey, eggs, various breads, and tea were among the tasty offerings that were served for breakfast at the open terrace of Goygol Hotel.
Local eggs from organic free-range chickens were not only delicious, but also had beautiful bright yellow yolks.
Let me tell you a little about this part of Azerbaijan before I move on to describe my tasty dinner. After an earthquake which hit the area on 25 September 1139, parts of the Kapaz Mount collapsed and blocked the path of the Kurekchay River which resulted in diversion of water and subsequently creation of the Goygol and Maralgol lakes. The lakes are situated at the footsteps of Murovdag in the Goygol National Park. Surrounded by marshland, moorland, mountains, and dense forests, this area is nature lovers’ paradise.
Goygol, one of the most beautiful and cleanest lakes in Azerbaijan, is situated at 1,556 m (5,105 ft).
Maralgol Lake is located at higher altitude, at 1,910 m (6,266 ft), than Goygol Lake; and it is connected with Goygol Lake via Akhsu River.
The area of the Goygol National Park is almost entirely covered by forests and has a rich flora with over 420 plant species, 20 of which are endemic to the area.
Lamb Chop Kebab – lamb chops seasoned with salt, pepper, and thyme grilled on a mangal, an Azerbaijani style charcoal grill.
The whole experience of savoring delicious food made with the freshest ingredients while taking in the view, listening to birds sing, and breathing in fresh mountain air was magical and one I will never forget. Happy travels!
